How to prevent periodontitis

Dr. Bobbi Trifonova, MVM
Veterinary Surgeon Rockhall Veterinary Clare St. Vets

The most common oral disease in dogs and cats is the inflammation of the deeper supporting structures of the tooth and surrounding tissues, the gums and ligaments around the teeth, called periodontitis/Peridontal disease.

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gum) is the earliest stage of periodontal disease. Gingivitis is caused by bacterial plaque. The plaque mineralizes into tartar creating more inflammation, covering the crown of the tooth, and destroying the attachment of the tooth to the surrounding jaw bone.
Dental disease causes significant, chronic pain in pets and can lead to heart, lung and kidney diseases.
The treatment of periodontal disease involves a thorough dental cleaning both above and below the gumline and x-rays may be needed to determine the severity of the disease. Your veterinarian will make recommendations based on your pet’s overall health and the health of your pet’s teeth, and provide you with options to consider.
Your pet has to have a general anaesthetic, which might sound a little scary, but a full free dental health check and same day result pre-aneasthetic bloods tests are available at all Rockhall Veterinary practices to minimise the risk to your pets.

Regularly brushing of your pet’s teeth is the single most effective thing you can do to keep their teeth healthy between dental cleanings, and may reduce the frequency or even eliminate the need for periodic dental cleaning by your veterinarian. Daily brushing is best, but it’s not always possible and brushing several times a week can be effective. Most dogs accept brushing, but cats can be a bit more resistant patience and training from early age it is important. A water additive can be another realistic option, that’s simple to administer.

At Rockhall Veterinary, we offer free dental health checks all year round and also have 10% off dental procedures and all dental products for the month of February.

Our preferred dental products include Oxyfresh water additive and dental gel which have been tried and tested by our teams.
